How Nostr makes censorship practically impossible

Nostr's censorship resistance is not marketing. It is a consequence of how the protocol is built. What gets protected, what does not.

"Censorship resistance" gets thrown around as a Nostr tagline without much technical grounding. This article explains what actually makes Nostr hard to censor, what it protects against, and where the protection does not extend.

Not all censorship threats are equal. Nostr defeats some of them decisively and some not at all.

One-line version. Nostr makes protocol-wide censorship practically impossible because there is no protocol authority to pressure. Specific relays can refuse specific users; specific clients can hide specific content; governments can block specific apps. None of these take the user off the network; they just require the user to route around them. This is weaker than "uncensorable" but much stronger than any platform's guarantees.

What makes Nostr hard to censor

Three structural properties.

No headquarters. There is no Nostr company. A government cannot subpoena Nostr; there is nobody to subpoena. A lawsuit against Nostr has no defendant. A takedown order against Nostr has nobody to serve. The absence of a legal person at the center is the strongest form of censorship resistance because every legal mechanism starts with "which entity must comply."

Portable identity. Your account lives on your device, not on any server. If the server you published to stops serving your events, you publish to a different server. Your identity, your followers, and your history travel with you across relay changes. Nobody can freeze the account itself.

Many equivalent relays. Nostr's content is replicated across many independent relays, and new ones can be spun up cheaply. Blocking one relay does not silence anyone; it just requires rerouting. Blocking all relays requires coordinated action against independently-operated servers in many jurisdictions simultaneously, which has no precedent at scale.

Combined, these three mean Nostr is hard to censor through legal or technical means aimed at a single choke point. The choke points are not there.

Who tries to censor social protocols, and why

A realistic list of adversaries and their typical moves.

Governments enforce content laws and sometimes impose content bans for political reasons. Their usual tools: legal pressure on domestic companies, app store takedowns, ISP-level blocking, platform negotiations. Nostr blunts the first three and is immune to the fourth.

Platforms remove content that violates their own policies, often under pressure from governments, advertisers, or user complaints. Nostr has no platform in this role; moderation happens at the relay and client levels with no central arbiter.

Relay operators decide what events to accept. They are the closest thing to censors Nostr has. A relay can refuse any user or topic; in practice, most accept everything except spam. Users affected by a relay's refusal switch to other relays.

Corporate actors pressure platforms to remove content for commercial reasons. Nostr has no commercial intermediary to pressure. Ad-pullout campaigns, which work on Twitter, have no target on Nostr.

Each adversary is weakened by Nostr's design, but not all equally. Government blocking can affect specific points of access (apps, relays, ISP routes) even if it cannot affect the protocol itself.

What Nostr does not protect against

Honest list of the things that do get censored or filtered, in practice.

Relay-level refusal. Any relay can refuse any user for any reason. Users with unpopular views find some relays will not serve them. They move to others. The inconvenience is real; the silencing is not total.

Client-level filtering. Mainstream clients filter spam, harassment, and sometimes specific kinds of content by default. Users can change these settings, but defaults matter. A user who never touches settings might not see content their friends post if the default filter caught it.

App store takedowns. Apple and Google can remove Nostr client apps from their stores under pressure. This has happened (Damus was briefly removed in China). Alternative distribution paths (F-Droid, direct APK, web clients) work around it, but there is an inconvenience cost.

Government blocking of specific relays or ISPs blocking WebSocket traffic. In the most aggressive censorship regimes, the cost of using Nostr rises because the user needs a VPN, Tor, or similar. The protocol keeps working for users who can route around the block.

Deanonymization through posting patterns. If your identity is already linked to your real name, Nostr does not hide your posts from anyone who wants to see them. Censorship resistance is about the account continuing to function, not about keeping your posts private.

Nostr is not a magic shield. It is a system designed so that the attack surface is the user's connectivity, not a central company the adversary can threaten.

Real-world case studies

Nostr has faced censorship attempts; how they played out reveals the system's behavior.

Damus in China, 2023. Apple removed Damus from the Chinese App Store after pressure from Chinese authorities. Users in China could no longer install Damus through official channels. What happened: users switched to other clients (Primal, Amethyst via F-Droid, or web clients), the app was reinstated a few months later, and nobody lost their Nostr account during the gap. The protocol continued to function; only one specific app was affected.

Relay content disputes. Various times, specific users have had posts refused by specific relays (typically for NSFW content, specific political topics, or suspected spam patterns). The users moved to relays with different policies. Their networks noticed; some friends followed them to the new relays, some did not. The loss was partial connectivity, not account erasure.

Post deletion after public outcry. When a Nostr user posts something that sparks calls for removal, the protocol does not have a single button to press. Relays voluntarily honor deletion requests at their own discretion. Popular posts often survive deletion attempts because they are replicated too widely for any coordinated removal.

These cases show the reality: censorship exists on Nostr, but it does not work the way it does on centralized platforms. Nobody has unilateral power, so every action requires coordination across independent parties, and the protocol's design resists that coordination.

What the user actually experiences

For a user in a normal environment (Europe, US, most of Asia outside China, most of Africa, Latin America), Nostr feels the same as any other social network. No censorship is apparent because none is happening to them.

For a user in a high-censorship environment (China, Iran, Russia in specific windows, parts of Central Asia), Nostr requires some workarounds: VPN or Tor for access, direct APK installation instead of app stores, occasionally switching relays. The workarounds are established and well-known; the community documents them actively.

For a user who is targeted specifically by an adversary (political dissidents, whistleblowers, journalists on contested topics), Nostr is a meaningful improvement over platforms because the protocol itself cannot be ordered to shut them down. Specific relays can refuse them; they switch relays. Specific apps might be pressured; they use other apps or the web.

What "censorship resistant" realistically means

Not "nobody can interfere with your posts ever." That is too strong. Some relays will refuse some users. Some clients will filter some content. Some governments will block specific apps.

What it does mean: no central authority can order your account silenced across the whole network. The network has no center to order. A censorship attempt has to chase down every relay, every client, every app store, every ISP, in every country, and persuade each independent party separately. No real-world adversary has ever managed that against Nostr, and the ones who tried found the attempt exhausting compared to the result.

This is the realistic version of censorship resistance. It is closer to water than concrete: pressing on it redistributes it rather than contains it. A determined user will always have a working path, even if specific paths are closed.

For most users, this is the strongest guarantee they will find on any modern social network. For the specific users who need it most, it is the reason Nostr exists.

Frequently asked questions

Can a country block Nostr?
Partially. A country can block specific relays hosted in its jurisdiction, and specific Nostr client apps in its app stores. Users then move to relays hosted elsewhere or install clients outside app stores. Because Nostr is a protocol, not a company, there is no headquarters to target. Blocking the protocol completely requires blocking WebSocket connections broadly, which collaterally breaks much of the modern internet.
Can someone delete my posts on Nostr?
Not reliably. You can publish a deletion request (kind:5), but relays are not required to honor it. Some relays delete; some do not. A post that was replicated to ten relays might come down from seven and stay on three. The practical answer is that Nostr posts are closer to 'published' than 'erasable'.
Is everything on Nostr unmoderated?
The protocol does not moderate. Individual relays and clients do. A relay can refuse to accept events it does not like; a client can refuse to display events the user does not want to see. Moderation happens at the edges, not the center. The system has moderation; nobody has protocol-wide moderation authority.
Can the FBI shut down Nostr?
Not easily. The FBI can subpoena specific relay operators in the US, seize specific servers, or pressure specific companies. It cannot take down relays hosted outside its jurisdiction, and the protocol has no central authority to subpoena. Shutdown attempts have happened against specific pieces of the ecosystem; none have affected the protocol's continued operation.
Has anyone ever been censored on Nostr?
Yes, at the relay and client levels. Relays regularly refuse to serve specific accounts; some clients filter specific accounts by default. Nobody has been network-wide silenced because there is no network-wide authority to silence them. If one relay refuses, others serve. This is what Nostr's censorship resistance actually looks like in practice: graceful degradation, not invincibility.
